NFL Drafts: Round 1 QBs in History 1997-1998

This year QBs have performed quite well. Andrew Luck breaking many records, Robert Griffin the 3rd putting the Redskins in a wild card opportunity, and Ryan Tannehill bring Miami back into its tough division. It wasn't always like this though. 1st found QBs used to be a lot riskier then now.

In 1997, one QB was drafted Jim Druckenmiller. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers at 26th overall. In his career he had 239 yards passing for 1 TD and 4 interceptions. In 1999, he got traded to the Dolphins and was released in the year 2000 and never saw a NFL snap again. This year was a total bust on 1st round draft pick QBs.

In 1998, 2 QBs were drafted: Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf. Peyton Manning was drafted number 1 overall in the draft by the Indianapolis Colts. In his career he has had 58,330 yards passing, 428 TDs, and 207 interceptions. He played for the Colts from 1998-2011 winning the 2006 Super Bowl and gaining 11 Pro Bowls. In 2012, he was recently signed by the Denver Broncos after a neck surgery keeping him out of 2011. Ryan Leaf was not as fortunate. Ryan Leaf was drafted 2nd overall in the draft by the San Diego Chargers. During his preseason, he was a horrible teammate and mistreated everyone and suffered many penalties. In his career he threw for 3666 yards and 14 TDs and 36 interceptions. He played for the San Diego Chargers from 1998-2000. During this time, he sustained many injuries. He then went on as back-up for the Dallas Cowboys in 2001. He was then dropped a year later and never played a snap again.

To sum up, the 1st few years of 1st round QBs were not that successful except for Peyton Manning, but it will soon begin to get better.
